Lighthouses of Digitization
Cities are living spaces that have to meet the challenges with globalization and urbanization in the digital age. Successful urban development concepts need a sustainable digitization strategy on the future topics of smart mobility services, successful energy system transformation, social participation and ecological responsibility.
With the Smart City Index, the digital association Bitkom collects a digital ranking for Germany’s large cities and compares the progress of digitization in cities and regions. The successful transformation to a digital and networked city is analyzed and evaluated in five categories: administration, IT and communication, energy and environment, mobility and society.
Smart City projects work on intelligent living spaces which sustainably increase the quality of life in cities sustainably. The key is technological solutions which support the holistic digitization of the public sector. After all, the need and demand for digital innovations for mobility, energy, environment and communication is growing.

The Stage for Visionary Innovation Drivers
Clean water thanks to smart sensors, completely new mobility concepts with the help of data analytics - many startups are working to drive digitization in cities, communities and public spaces. In this way, they are making our lives and our everyday lives more efficient, more modern and, above all, simpler.
The Smart Country Startup Award, part of the Smart Country Convention, honors young companies with outstanding solutions in Smart City and GovTech categories. Bitkom promotes smart city ideas and digital administration concepts through this award.
Congratulations to the #SCSA25 Winner!
The Berlin-based company GovIntel was honored with the Smart Country Startup Award 2025. Using AI, the company analyzes procurement notices, budget data, meeting documents, and parliamentary debates. This generates early insights into planned procurements—often six to twelve months before an official tender is published. Companies can position their solutions in time, while public administrations get to know suitable innovations before the tight framework of a tender is set.
#SCCON26 Startup Award
Starting in May 2026, startups can submit their ideas and prototypes for the Smart Country Startup Award. The selected finalists will present their projects to an expert jury and a broad audience at #SCCON26. The winning startup will receive a stage slot in the following year worth €10,000, as well as a one-year Get Started membership with Bitkom.
