From Concept to Everyday Life in the Smart City of Amsterdam
Sensor registries, zero-emission zones, circular economy: Amsterdam is integrating digital and sustainable urban development into people’s daily lives through concrete projects.

Amsterdam is one of the world’s leading smart cities – partly due to the countless forward-looking projects that have been implemented in recent years through concrete structures, regulations, and services throughout the city.
Amsterdam’s approach is clear: try it out, scale it up, and make it transparent – that’s the motto.
A City Makes Its Sensors Visible
An unusually concrete example is the public sensor registry. There, citizens can see at a glance where sensors are deployed throughout the city and what data they collect – such as traffic, noise, pedestrian flows, or shipping.
In doing so, Amsterdam addresses a question that is becoming central to an increasing number of smart cities: How can digitalization be advanced without jeopardizing the trust of the city’s residents?
Amsterdam also prioritizes transparency when it comes to algorithms. In its own registry, the city documents automated systems used by the administration – for example, in parking enforcement or in processing certain reports.
The Cycling City Continues to Reinvent Mobility
Anyone driving in Amsterdam quickly realizes that this city isn’t primarily designed for car traffic. With narrow streets and limited parking, Amsterdam has instead earned a reputation as a global cycling metropolis.
Smart traffic light timing, redesigned intersections, and improved management of various traffic flows are intended to make routes safer and more efficient. At the same time, Amsterdam is driving the decarbonization of transportation: zero-emission zones for delivery vehicles and trucks, as well as the expansion of charging infrastructure, are gradually transforming logistics in the city center - moving away from climate-damaging internal combustion engines toward electric vehicles and alternative mobility concepts.
Circular Economy as an Urban Strategy
Amsterdam is particularly ambitious when it comes to resource management. By 2030, the consumption of new raw materials is to be halved compared to 2016, and by 2050, the city aims to operate on a fully circular economy.
This goes beyond recycling. The strategy ranges from circular construction—where materials are reused for other purposes after demolition – to Kate Raworth’s “Doughnut Model,” which states that people’s needs can be met without exceeding the world’s ecological limits, all the way to new concepts for food and consumer goods, such as repair networks, sharing platforms, and the “use instead of own” principle.
Amsterdam thus demonstrates how the “Smart City” concept can transform the city on multiple levels: Innovations are not treated as isolated projects standing side by side, but are integrated into urban development, offering concrete solutions for citizens, the city administration, and climate protection.
