Artificial intelligence has long been more than just a topic for the future in local government. New solutions have emerged, existing applications have been expanded, and the first AI offerings have made the transition from pilot projects to live operation.

At the Smart Country Convention, VITAKO – the Federal Association of Local Government IT Service Providers – is bringing together the latest AI showcases from the field of local government IT. On Wednesday, 14 October 2026, from 10.45 am to 11.30 am, VITAKO members will take to the Red Stage to demonstrate, through concise practical examples, how they are currently developing and deploying artificial intelligence – from generative AI and intelligent assistance systems to integration into specific administrative services.

Lars Hoppmann, Managing Director of VITAKO, will host the programme. The focus will be on four showcases:

• AKDB: Cross-departmental impact of AI – the intelligent administrative assistant (Christian Davepon)
• regio iT: davinKI – AI for day-to-day municipal work. Secure. Reliable. Practical. (Yasmeen Barbar)
• ekom21: Dynamic evacuation decisions using AI in civil protection (Nina Mergner)
• Prosoz Herten: Speech-to-text with AI – documentation in minutes rather than hours (Arne Baltissen)

The focus is on real-world experience: What is already working today? How does AI relieve the workload on staff, automate processes and improve administrative services? And which approaches have the potential to be widely adopted in future and integrated into existing specialist procedures?
