If you want to keep track of smart city projects, you need more than just experience. In addition to digital know-how, methodological skills are also crucial. The Smart City Academy delivers exactly that: practical, needs-based, flexible and free of charge.
As a digital training programme offered by the Coordination and Transfer Office (KTS) on behalf of the BMWSB, it is aimed at municipal professionals who want to shape smart urban development in a sustainable way. The modular programme offers five basic modules and individually selectable elective modules – bookable individually or, in combination, as an additional qualification with the Smart City Manager certificate.
The academy's first season got off to a successful start in March 2025: more than 230 participants have already acquired knowledge on data strategies, digital twins and innovation management. Nine elective modules covering current topics such as artificial intelligence, communication, standards, procurement law and IP law have now been added for the second season, which starts in September. This enables local authorities to expand their specialist knowledge and skills in a targeted manner and adapt them to their needs – flexibly and optimally integrated into their everyday work. With qualification, knowledge transfer and direct networking, the Smart City Academy supports local authorities in shaping the digital transformation actively and with a view to the future.
In addition to the academy, KTS's shared knowledge is also growing with the continuously expanding collection of publications such as studies, working aids, sample solutions and templates on the Smart City Dialogue platform. New additions include practical knowledge products from the working groups of the Smart Cities Model Projects (MPSC) – from guidelines on urban data platforms to methods of impact measurement. They are based directly on the experiences of the model projects, with the aim of enabling all local authorities to benefit from these experiences and tried-and-tested solutions.
If you would like to find out more about the Academy, the MPSC and its knowledge products, we cordially invite you to visit the BMWSB stand.
