Growth of Lithuanian ICT sector: digital education, infrastructure and leadership in e-government
The Lithuanian ICT sector has a rich and growing community of IT professionals, employees of the sector have a high level of digital technology skills, well-developed communications and telecommunications infrastructure. This allows the sector to grow rapidly, develop innovative solutions and apply them abroad.
In Europe, Lithuania is the leader in computer literacy, almost 97 percent of Lithuanian students have IT skills. Lithuania has very fast fiber-optic internet, and wireless internet is the fastest in the world.
Lithuania was one of the first countries in the world to implement a commercial mobile e-signature solution that allows person to set up a business and perform business administration related procedures online. Lithuania is also a leader in cybersecurity. According to The Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), Lithuania ranks 4th as a country, which invests the most in cybersecurity, first three countries are United Kingdom, the United States of America and France.
Thanks to the developed infrastructure and digital literacy, the Lithuanian ICT sector has grown the fastest among all sectors of the economy. Over the last five years, it has grown by about 70 percent, while overall growth in the Lithuanian economy was about 17 percent, and in 2018, sales of ICT sector in foreign markets grew nearly by 14 percent.
The experience of digitalisation of the public sector in Lithuania and the high level of Lithuanian IT specialists give Lithuanian companies an advantage in implementing the latest solutions not only in Lithuania but also in other countries. Lithuania, as a partner country, will present its solutions at the Smart Country Convention in Berlin on 22-24 of October.
