12,700 participants, 400 speakers and 150 exhibitors: This positive result marked the end of the second edition of the Smart Country Convention, Germany's leading congress trade fair for the digitization of the public sector.

The organizers of the event, Messe Berlin and the digital association Bitkom, were more than satisfied: “The development of the city of the future is a joint task for politics and administration, business and science. The Smart Country Convention brought all the key players together,” said Bitkom President Achim Berg.

Messe-Berlin CEO Dr. Christian Göke summarized after three days: “A clear increase in the number of visitors and exhibitors — the second edition of the Smart Country Convention shows the importance of digitization at all levels — governments, town halls and public companies.” He sees great growth potential for the coming years — also on an international level: “On the basis of the success of our partner countries Denmark in 2018 and Lithuania in 2019, we will also consistently increase the attractiveness for international exhibitors and visitors”.

Darius Jonas Semaška, Ambassador of this year's partner country Lithuania, also draws a positive conclusion: “As a country of digital innovations it was a great honor for Lithuania to be a partner country at this year's Smart Country Convention. The advanced solutions of Lithuanian companies can help to improve the public administration of other countries. We are sure that the contacts we have established here will strengthen the cooperation between business and public administration of Lithuania and Germany”.

Among the numerous highlights of this year's Smart Country Convention were the premiere of the Bitkom Smart City Awards, the Smart Country Startup Award, full-day conferences on the topics of digital office, energy and mobility, and numerous presentations by prominent speakers. Among others, Linas Antanas Linkevicius (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania), Nikolai Astrup (Digital Minister of Norway), Ramona Pop (Berlin Senator for Economics, Energy and Operations), Anne Katrin Bohle (State Secretary at BMI), Joschka Fischer (Managing Partner of Joschka Fischer & Company) and Sabina Jeschke (Board Member for Digitization and Technology at Deutsche Bahn) made their appearance at the event.

The next Smart Country Convention will take place from 27-29 October 2020.
